Divorcing couples in Illinois are taking note of an emerging trend known as collaborative divorce that offers them an unconventional new way to dissolve their marriage. Instead of the traditional combative divorce model, couples who divorce using the collaborative law approach actually work together to decide the terms of their divorce.

Maternal grandmother files for child support for granddaughter

Illinois residents might be interested to hear that the maternal grandmother of a child whose father is accused of murdering her mother has secured custody of the child and is seeking child support. The 6-year-old girl's grandmother, who lives in Towson, Maryland, reportedly filed her petition on Aug. 13, and a hearing is slated for Sept. 18.

Illinois gambling winnings may be taken to pay child support

Custodial parents who are seeking to collect child support from a former partner now have an additional means of obtaining past-due amounts. On Aug. 12, Illinois governor Pat Quinn approved House Bill 2843, which requires race tracks and casinos to garnish gambling winnings from parents who owe past-due child support. The governor signed the legislation without comment, and it became effective immediately.

Law requires man to pay for another man's child

Illinois fathers might be alarmed to hear about the case of a divorced father of two in Michigan who was ordered to pay child support for a child that his ex-wife had with another man. The man reportedly did not even know that his wife had another child with another man until his two sons informed him. He was, therefore, surprised to receive a letter that stated he owed $8,500 in unpaid child support for the child that was not his own.
